Birth to Three Matters and the Foundation Stage

The Nursery Curriculum

We recognise that for young children learning does not take place in ‘subjects’ as it does for older children. Play is the medium through which children develop and learn. Young children are constantly learning from the environment and people around them.

For the babies to 3 year olds we use ‘Birth to Three Matters’ as a framework for our work with the youngest children. We focus on four aspects of young children’s development
• a strong child
• a skilful child
• a competent learner
• a healthy child

For 3-5 year olds there are certain things we do want them to learn and so for the purposes of organising teaching and learning we have curriculum areas.

These areas are Mathematical Development, Communications Language & Literacy, Personal, Social & Emotional development , Knowledge and Understanding of the World, Creativity and Physical. Development.
The D of ES have published the Foundation Stage Guidance and within this are the Early Learning Goals relating to the areas of learning and development which children are expected to attain by the time they finish end of Reception Class. Our curriculum enables children to make good progress towards achieving these goals.
